V14: Crafting & Exploration


The most immediately noticable change with this update is that the game has been renamed from Word Tile Game to Sternly Worded Adventures. Content wise this update mainly focuses on events and functions for the wizards towers, including a crafting system that can have effects between runs. It also, potentially overzealously, cleans up the dictionary, with around 86k words being removed from the dictionary after cross referencing with Wiktionary.

New events

With this update, the number of events in the game is now 10. New ones include, a one-off event that can reward you a gear item, three wandering trader events, two of which can happen more than once, one serving as a warning for an area hazard, two mutually exclusive soft-tutorial events based on what the player does leading up to the first dungeon, and an alternative hidden-path event and a follow up to it. The previous beggar hidden path event can now trigger at any node type in rare situations where non-crossroads lead to secret nodes. Some events now have images, and many now have pre- and post- screens with additional lore.

Wizards towers

The previously useless secret wizards tower locations now have two purposes; firstly they now have the ability to combine some gear items, for a cost, and combine half-used potions, for free. This means the infinitives gauntlet added in a previous version is now legitimately obtainable. Crafting a gear item permanently removes the components from the gear drop tables, and permanently adds the result to the gear drop tables. This affects all future runs.

Wizards towers also have the ability to clear a sizable area of the fog of war. Oh yes, also this version adds fog of war. The main reasons for doing this are: It gives a sense of exploration, it allows me to direct the players attention, and it lowers the amount of distractions players have right at the start.

Wizards towers now have 8 additional variations.

New gear items

There are 4 new gear items added this version, 5 if you count the infinitives gauntlet that's now actually obtainable. They are:

Wild trinket
If you have no wildcards in the tileboard whenever the tile queue is refilled, you get a wildcard tile.
Crystal ball
A reusable insight potion effect. Insight potions now have the added effect of refreshing the ball.
Combined vowel movement
A crafted combination of the other two vowel movement books.
Blank locket
A crafted combination of the wild trinket and blank necklace.

Other additions

  • Roads being unhidden now have an accompanying particle effect.
  • Item selection screens now have a confirm button.
  • Many buttons now have inactive tooltips.

Other changes

  • Enemy health is now flipped.
  • Player indicator on the overworld now changes to a raft if it's over water.
  • Clicking an insight potion (or the crystal ball) no longer uses it if it would give you no new information.
  • Redid the idle animations of the great sword skeletons.
  • Overworld map now supports arbitrary screen resolutions.
  • Overworld buttons now take up less screen space.
  • Stats page now updates on window resize, and better supports narrow resolutions.
  • Combat UI elements are now positioned relative to the screen edges.

Fixes

  • Fixed some specific instances of world generation code leaving disconnected nodes.
  • Fixed the game on iOS.
  • Fixed a typo in the insight potion tooltip.
  • Fixed gear display in RPG mode floating left with more than 6 gear items equipped.
